According to Brandes, it was perhaps the landscapes
of Oklahoma from his childhood, bright reds and greens brightened
by rain, in contrast to the earth," that have stayed in
his memory and inspire him most. His perception
of activity and observation of change found in even the most
common places have carried over in to fascinating shapes and
colors arranged into intricate spatial relationships.
There is an evolution that takes place in the viewer's mind
as the eye absorbs the enormous energy of forms and colors that
is translated into a landscape of surpassing beauty and serenity.
"If there was any one thing I would like conveyed
in a painting I do, it would be a 'sense' of the action or the
'act' of painting." The artist explains, "When
I say painting is my profession, then I want the viewer to sense
the action - only then, is the painting successful. |
